Meet the lovely Ms. Ellen Grant, the Deputy Mayor of the City of Buffalo. Ellen will share her philosophy "You have to know your past to live your present so you can invent and design your future" . She calls it her "Odyssey Philosophy"  because she is still learning, shaping and growing. She will share some obstacles, lessons learned, a little adventure and principles that have guided her, along with her FIVE LIFE GUIDES: Perseverance, Power, Piety, Prejudice, Principles.

Ellen E. Grant, PhD, LCSW-R currently works as Deputy Mayor, City of Buffalo, New York.  She has over 30 years experience in health, behavioral health, education, government, and not-for-profit organizations. Her past leadership positions include Commissioner-Erie County Department of Mental Health and CEO-Niagara Falls Medical Center. She has taught at the undergraduate and graduate level in college & university positions.  Ellen is also a  licensed clinical social worker, therapist and executive coach

In 1988, Ellen started First Advantage Consulting. Her business consulting includes health care, education, behavioral health and wellness, leadership and diversity as well as executive coaching.

She is an author and published her first book “Managing in Black & White” in 1991. She also authored a chapter in the book, “Go Tell Michelle: African American Women Write to the First Lady” and has written chapters in other professional publications.  Her current  publication is “Management for You: Leadership Can Be Colorblind”.

Ellen has received a number of awards at the local and state level, including Western New York Women’s Hall of Fame. Her voluntary work has been extensive. She is Past President-NY State, National Association of Social Workers.  She currently serves on the National Administration & Supervision Committee. Ellen is also the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from Medaille College. In 1996, Ellen was elected President-NY State Association of Counties; the second woman and first Black in the association’s 72-year history. In 1997, The International Women’s Forum Leadership Foundation selected her as one of 12 women internationally to participate in a yearlong leadership training program that included training at Harvard University.

Her voluntary work includes emeritus status on the State University of NY at Buffalo Foundation, WNY Women’s Foundation. She continues to serve on Advisory Board, the Black Women’s Health Study, Boston University; the largest health research study of its kind in the US. She is past national Co-Chair. In September 2018 until fall 2019, Ellen served on the advisory board of Bank on Buffalo. Three years ago, she started The DivHERsity Servant Leadership Award to honor three 7th or 8th grade girls for academic & good citizenship in a Buffalo public School, Charter School & rural school. In 2018, Ellen started the not for profit organization, Women Who Lead, a women’s mentoring program.
